Hello! My name is Maria Maffucci, a candidate for Portland City Council At-Large 2026.
While I am a newcomer to the realm of local politics and running for office, my commitment, drive, and passion I have for public service is not.
I want to add that I’m funding this campaign entirely on my own. Not one cent has come/will come from donations, political organizations, PACs, or special interests.

I
Small and Local Business Support
Supporting Portland's small businesses and local economy is essential to our city's future. Through my involvement with the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce, PROPEL, and years of community engagement, I've gained valuable insight into the opportunities and challenges facing our business community. I believe City Hall should be a collaborative partner by streamlining regulations, listening to business owners, fostering a welcoming downtown, encouraging entrepreneurship, and creating an environment where local businesses can start, grow, and thrive.
Addressing Homelessness & Substance Abuse
Lasting solutions to homelessness and substance abuse require equal emphasis on addressing both the root causes that lead people into these circumstances and the challenges they face once they are there. We need approaches that help individuals achieve long-term stability. This includes improved access to housing, treatment and recovery services, and mental health resources. In addition, we need programs that provide clear pathways to employment, career development, and case management to support long-term recovery and independence.
Affordability
Affordability has become one of Portland's biggest challenges, affecting not only housing but also our local economy and the overall quality of life for residents. Too many people are struggling with rising housing costs, increased everyday expenses, and the growing difficulty of building a future in the city they call home. I believe we need a balanced, practical approach that expands housing opportunities, streamlines responsible development, supports small businesses, and ensures taxpayer dollars are invested wisely, transparently, and with measurable results. By making thoughtful investments and removing unnecessary barriers, we can help keep Portland a place where people of all backgrounds can afford to live, work, and thrive.

Pedestrian Safety/Accessibility
As someone who relies on walking and public transportation every day, I understand the importance of safe, reliable, and accessible infrastructure. I support improving pedestrian safety through strengthening public transit, maintaining our streets and sidewalks, enhancing infrastructure accessibility for all residents, improving signage, and cleaner public spaces to create a city that's easier and safer to navigate for all.
Survivor Support
& Violence Prevention

Supporting survivors and preventing violence has long been a crucial part of my community involvement. Drawing on my experience as a Volunteer Advocate with SARSSM and my commitment to personal safety, I will work to expand self-defense education, strengthen resources for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, and increase public awareness of prevention, reporting, and available support services.
Responsible Tourism & Protecting Casco Bay
Portland's tourism industry is an important part of our local economy. It supports small businesses, restaurants, retailers, museums, and hospitality workers. However, as tourism continues to grow, we must ensure it remains sustainable by protecting our neighborhoods, preserving the health of Casco Bay, and maintaining the quality of life that residents deserve. I believe we can welcome visitors while responsibly managing tourism's impacts through thoughtful planning, collaboration, and long-term stewardship.
